In May 2022, multiple cases of monkeypox were identified in several non-endemic countries. Studies are currently underway to find out in how may ways the virus can spread and to control the disease, sources of infection and transmission patterns.

What is monkeypox?
- Monkeypox is a viral disease which is caused by monkeypox virus. It is virus which has transmitted from animals to humans.
- This virus is part of the same family of viruses as smallpox, it's symptoms are similar to small pox symptoms, but milder and it is rarely fatal.
- But it is not related to chickenpox.
What are the symptoms of monkeypox?
- Headache
- Muscle aches and backache
- Fever
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Chills
- Exhaustion
- Sore throat, nasal congestion or cough are respiratory symptoms
- Rashes that can look like pimples or blisters
How monkeypox spread?
Monkeypox spread in various ways.
- direct contact with the infectious rash, scabs or body fluids
- respiratory secretions
- touching items like clothing and linens which previously touched the infectious rash or body fluids.
- pregnant people can spread the virus to their fetus through the placenta
- by being scratched or bitten by the animal
- by preparing or eating meat or using products from an infected animal
Monkeypox can spread from the time symptoms starts until the rash has fully healed and a fresh layer of skin has formed. The illness typically lasts 2-4 weeks.
What preventive measure should be taken to avoid getting monkeypox?
These are the following steps to prevent one from getting monkeypox:
- Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash that looks like monkeypox.
- Do not handle or touch the bedding, towels or clothing of a person with monkey.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Remain isolated if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms, including sore throat, nasal congestion or cough.
- Only go out to see a healthcare provider or for an emergency.
- If you ever need to leave isolation, you should cover the rash and wear a well-fitting mask.
Who should have monkeypox vaccination?
People who have been expposed to monkeypox and people who are at higher risk of being exposed to monkeypox should have their vaccination done, including:
- Public who have been identified by public health officials as a contact of someone with monkeypox.
- People who may have been exposed to monkeypox.
- People whose jobs may expose them to orthopoxviruses.
What is treatment for monkeypox virus?
There are no treatments specifically for monkeypox virus infections. However monkeypox and smallpox viruses are genetically similar, which means that antiviral drugs and vaccines developed to protect against smallpox may be used to prevent and treat monkeypox virus infections.
