1. A trilateral meeting held between India, France and UAE 

  • A trilateral meeting of the Focal Points of India, France and United Arab Emirates (UAE) was held on 28th of  July.
  • The countries exchanged their perspectives on the Indo-Pacific region and explored the potential areas of trilateral cooperation including Maritime Security, Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief, Blue Economy, Regional Connectivity, Cooperation in Multilateral Fora, Energy and Food Security, Innovation and Startups, Supply Chain Resilience and Cultural and People to People Cooperation.

2. Aircraft carries 'Vikrant' handed over to Indian Navy

  • India's first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 'Vikrant' was handed over to Indian Navy built by Cochin Shipyard. With the merging of this Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC), India joined a select group of Nations having the niche capability to indigenously design and build an aircraft carrier.
  • The name of India's first Aircraft Carrier was also INS Vikrant which played a vital role in 1971 war. The Aircraft Carrier was decommissioned on 31st January 1997 after 36 years of glorious service to the nation.
  • The length of this Aircraft Carrier is 262 meter and it is the largest ever warship built in the country. The IAC Vikrant is capable of operating 30 aircraft comprising MIG-29K fighter jets, Kamov-31 and MH-60R multi-role helicopters , in addition to indigenously manufactured Advanced Light Helicopters and Light Combat Aircraft.

3. Multiple projects of Sabar Dairy in Sabarkantha, Gujarat

  • Inauguration and laying of foundation stone for three projects of Sabar Dairy worth more than 1,000 crore rupees was done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Gadhoda Chawki in Sabarkantha in Gujarat.
  • Mr. Modi inaugurated a Power Plant with a capacity of around 120 metric tonnes per day and Aseptic Milk Packaging Plant with a capacity of three lakhs litre per day. He also laid foundation stone for one Cheese and Whey Drying Plant Project with an outlay of 600 crore rupees.

4. India has electricity generation capacity pf over 403 Giga Watt as on June 30

  • The country has an installed capacity of electricity generation of over 403 Giga Watt as on June 30. This information was given by Power Minister R K Singh in Lok Sabha on 28 July.
  • As said by Mr. Singh this is sufficient to meet the Peak Power Demand of the country of around 215.89 Giga Watt (GW) which had occurred in the month of April.

5. Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2021

  • The Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Bill, 2021 was scheduled to taken up for discussion in business of Lok Sabha for consideration and passing on 28th of July 2022.
  • The Lok Sabha has more Powers than the Rajya Sabha on account of it's greater numerical strength. Ordinary Bills can originate in either House of the Parliament, whereas Money Bills can be introduced only in the Lok Sabha. The Rajya Sabha cannot reject or amend the Money Bill.

6. Foreign Investments are coming in India

  • Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Equity inflow in manufacturing sectors have increased by 76 percent in last financial year compared to 2020-21 as reported by Commerce and Industry Ministry The Union government has said that India is rapidly emerging as preferred company for foreign investments in manufacturing sector.
  • Karnataka with over 37 percent and Maharashtra with over 26 percent are the top two states in receiving highest FDI Equity Inflow. Singapore and USA have emerged as top two sourcing nations in FDI Equity inflow followed by Mauritius, Netherland and Switzerland into India in 2021-22.

7. World Hepatitis Day on 28th July 2022

  • World Hepatitis Day is observed each year on 28th of July to raise awareness of Viral Hepatitis, which causes inflammation of the liver that leads to severe diseases and liver cancer.
  • Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya addressing an event in New Delhi on 28th July said that government is making all our efforts to make Hepatitis-free India and need to create more awareness among the people for screening Hepatitis so that early treatment is provided.

8. Shanghai Corporation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers Meeting

  • SCO Foreign Ministers Meeting is going to be organised in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr. S Jai Shankar will take part in the meeting of the SCO Council of Foreign Ministers.
  • The Meeting will discuss preparations for the upcoming Meeting of the Council of Heads of State on 15th and 16th September 2022. It is a political, economic and military organization aiming to maintain peace, security and stability in the Eurasian region.
  • The current members of Shanghai Corporation Organisation (SCO) are Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India, Pakistan and Iran.

9. United Nations (UN) calls for repeal of Hong Kong's National Security Law

  • A United Nations Monitoring Committee has called for the repeal of Hong Kong's National Security Law. It is noted that the law was passed by the National People's Congress of China without consultation with the people of Hong Kong.

10. Increase of 75 basis points in interest rate in United States (US)

  • US Federal Reserve hiked interest rate by 75 basis points to check inflation.
  • President of America Joe Biden is facing political backlash for surging prices, which he has mainly blamed on the Russia-Ukraine conflict that has sent global food and energy prices soaring.
  • Chair of the Federal Reserve of the United States Jerome Powell said that another large increase could be appropriate at the next meeting.
  • According to Economists it has been the most aggressive Fed tightening cycle since the 1980's.

11. Women outnumber men in Bangladesh (6th Population and Housing Census ,2022)

  • The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) revealed it's 6th Population and Housing Census, 2022 which was conducted in the month of June, 2022.
  • It is for the first time in the history of Bangladesh women outnumber men in it's total population. The Census recorded 8.33 crore women, 8.17 crore men and 12,629 transgenders in the total population. 
  • Dhaka division has the largest population in the country with 4.4 crore people.

12. Inauguration of 44th Chess Olympiad at Chennai

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 44th Chess Olympiad at Chennai in Tamil Nadu on 28th July 2022. 
  • The Olympiad Torch which crossed the 75 iconic cities of the country was brought back at the stadium by five time world chess champion Vishwanathan  Anand and was handed over to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister MK Stalin and was later given to the chess prodigy Grandmaster Rameshbabu Pragnananda,
  • Talking to AIR news, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur said that India had already held the Under 17 Men's World Chess Championship and the Under 17 Women's Championship is to be held in October of 2022.

13. Sebastian Vettel announces retirement from Formula One

  • Four times world champion Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement from Formula One. The German racer Sebastian Vettel made the announcement ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, the 13th round of the season and will be his last race.
  • Vettel made his debut in 2007. He is 35 years old. His first title win came in 2010 which also made him the youngest title winner. he is third on the list of all time Grand Pix winners with 53 victories to his name. 
  • Only Lewis Hamilton and Michael Schumacher have more titles than him.

14. Commonwealth Games 2022 started at Birmingham 

  • The 22nd Commonwealth Games 2022 started on 28th July 2022 at Birmingham in United Kingdom (UK). The event will held till the 8th of August.
  • This sports extravaganza is witnessing the participation of 54 countries featuring more than 5,000 athletes. A 215 member Indian Consignment which includes 111 male players and 104 female players will compete in 15 sporting events.
  • P. V. Sindhu and Manpreet Singh will be India's flag bearer's at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, UK.
