Best Solar cells are going to be in the market

 Solar cells

Scientists have identified co-dopants that can increase the photovoltaic performance of transparent metal oxides such as Zinc Oxide (ZnO), Indium Oxide (In2O3) and Tin Oxide (SnO2)thereby creating more efficient and better performing and more stable solar cells as reported on 12 July 2022 by Pib.

These co-dopants will now make the solar cell much more efficient in working.

What is solar cell?

A solar cell also known as photovoltaic cell is an electrical device that converts the energy of light directly in to electricity by the photovoltaic effect. Solar cells are described as photovoltaic irrespective of whether the source in sunlight or an artificial light.

How solar cell works?

A solar cell is made up of two types of semiconductors, called p-type and n-type silicon. A solar cell consistes of a layer of p-type silicon placed next to a layer of n-type silicon. Solar cell works using these these two types of semiconductors. In the n-type layer, there is an excess of electrons, and in the p-type layer, there is an excess of positively charged holes. When these two semiconductors are placed one above the other, the electrons on one side of the n-type layer move into the holes on the other side of the junction, which creates an area around the junction, called the depletion zone in which electrons fill the holes.

When sunlight strikes a solar cell, electrons in the silicon are rejected, which results in the formation of 'holes' and movement of electrons takes place. If we connect the n-type and p-type layers with a metallic wire, the electrons will travel from the n-type layer by crossing the depletion zone and then go through the external wire back of the n-type which causes the flow of electricity.

Where are solar solar cells are used?

Solar energy has been in use from so many times.

Few uses of solar cells are:

  • This solar energy is used to generate electricity using cells. In rural areas the solar cell have used to recharge the battery at peoples homes.
  • Now the world has changed and so is the technology. Solar cells are very useful in powering space vehicles such as satellites and telescopes. It is an economical and reliable way of powering objects which would otherwise need much expensive and cumbersome fuel sources.
  • Solar cells are also used to power the rovers which visits the heavenly bodies in sky.
  • Now as days solar powered cars are being developed which is powered by an array of photovoltaic cells. In a solar cell powered car, the electricity created by the cell either directly powers the vehicle through a motor or goes into a storage battery.

Advantages of Solar Cells:

  • Renewable energy
  • Economy-friendly
  • Environment friendly
  • Long term energy
  • innovative energy
  • Infinite energy

Disadvantages of Solar Cells:

  • High investments
  • Interior needs
  • Seasonal Energy
  • Accommodation of solar cells at some places

Applications of Solar Energy:

As renewable energy it is safe and clean energy. It is applied in many domains such as in home applications, industrial, public lighting, smart phone charge and in aerospace.#hanumanstudies
